New senior social lunches tackling elderly isolation launch in Glasgow

The No1 Befriending Agency is organising its first Senior Social Lunch in Whiteinch, Glasgow on Friday 13th May. The lunch is open to elderly people and will be affordable.

Social enterprise The No1 Befriending Agency (previously Be-Friend), headed by Audrey Mutongi, is organising social lunches for older people to come together. The first lunch will be on Friday 13th May at the Cabin Restaurant in Whiteinch, from 1-4pm. For £8.75, attendees will get a three course meal, musical entertainment, a raffle ticket and plenty of interactive fun. Transport can be provided for greater Glasgow areas. Elderly people are welcome to attend alone, with friends or family. Audrey has recently received some funding to allow her to make these lunches a monthly occurrence.

Half of all older people in the UK consider the television as their main form of company. With her services, Audrey offers the possibility for a more human type of company to the 18000 of people who are over 65 in West Dunbartonshire and now to the 39,697 people over 75 in Glasgow with her social lunches.

Audrey says:

We can finally provide the kind of environment where senior citizens can have fun, feel at home and network, something I had aspired to organise for a long time. We have partnered with a restaurant well known in reviews for their tasty food! We will serve excellent, healthy, home cooking and have musician playing 60s and 70s songs. Come and join the fun!

The No1 Befriending Agency provides one to one support to older people in West Dunbartonshire. All of The No1 Befriending Agency’s clients already receive personal care support from the local authority but this care is usually a quick visit and there is no time to chat. Audrey visits her clients weekly and sits down with them for a cup of tea, takes them out to lunch or simply takes the time to listen and talk to them.

Audrey Mutongi originally received £5,000 in funding from Ditto, one of our programmes. The funding helped her get started with her venture that has since gone from strength to strength.

Karen McGregor, our Chief Executive says:

I am so pleased that Audrey’s social enterprise is taking off. We believe that her idea has great growth potential and by using a tried and tested Ditto model, she has been able to hit to ground running whilst ensuring that the business is sustainable and will allow her to bring in some profit to reinvest it in the community that she supports. Social enterprise is making a real difference in communities around Scotland and The No1 Befriending Agency is an inspirational example of how it is done.

The No1 Befriending Agency will host its first social lunch for older people on Friday 13th May, from 1-4pm, at the Cabin Restaurant in Whiteinch, 998 Dumbarton Rd, Glasgow G14 9UJ.
Tickets are £8.75, payable on the door. Reservations on 07780637818.
Transport can be provided for greater Glasgow areas and needs to be booked before 6th May, by calling 07780637818.
