Talking Mats

Talking Mats is an innovative social enterprise that improves the lives of people with communication difficulties, and the people close to them.

Their products are mats that increase peoples’ capacity to communicate effectively about things that matter to them.

The mats use communication symbols that are based on extensive research. They were designed by Speech and Language Therapists and developed through a programme of research at the University of Stirling.

The mats are used by clinical practitioners, carers and support workers in a wide range of health, social work, residential and education settings. They can be used for consulting children and young people or to overcome communication difficulties for people with learning disability or dementia.

Lois Cameron, director of Talking Mats, alongside Joan Murphy, received a Build It Award from Firstport in 2011 to develop her business.
